NTEM Attended "International Patent Licensing Seminar 2002"
in Tokyo

NTEM came to attend "International Patent Licensing Seminar 2002" in Tokyo from January 28 to 30, 2002. This seminar consisted of two keynote speeches and three panel discussions. Around the main topic of the Intellectual Property, the seminar entered into the problems in all aspects of technology transfer and intellectual property. The discussions ranged from the relevant economic theories, policies and regulations to the methods to assess and evaluate the technology; from the trend of the development of technology transfer, and its effect on economy as well to the analyses of specific cases.
This time, besides 25 experts, scholars from Europe and U.S.A invited to give speeches on the seminar, other attendees were all from domestic universities and enterprises. Northern Technology Exchange Market was the only foreign institution invited by Japanese initiators. The representatives of NTEM cherished this valuable opportunity very much. Besides listening to those two keynote speeches and taking part in all the panel discussions, we communicated well with the Japanese government officials, European and American experts and scholars at any opportunities during the session. And NTEM also arranged appointments with more than 20 foreign experts, scholars and entrepreneurs, such as Mr. Terry Young, the president of AUTM (Association of University Technology Managers), Mr. Jon Sandelin, a senior associate of Office of Technology Licensing of Stanford University, Dr. James A. Severson from Cornell Research Foundation, Mr. Colin Hunsley, the global director of technology commercialization of BTG International Ltd., Mr. Uwe Haug, the head of International Affairs of Steinbeis-Foundation, and Mr. Kari Kankaala from Sitra-Finnish Nation Fund, and etc. With those appointments, the representatives of NTEM introduced the function and the operation of NTEM, and the new situation of technology transfer after China's WTO accession, held discussions on the possible cooperation in the future with the representatives from foreign technology transfer organizations, and also identified some programs which both sides were interested in.
Through what we saw and heard at this seminar, we were deeply impressed that Japanese government, intermediary organizations, big companies, even the small and medium sized enterprises had paid high attention upon technology innovation, technology transfer, and the protection and utilization of the Intellectual Property, which had made great progress until now. With China's WTO accession, it's a pretty urgent task for Chinese research institutes and enterprises to enhance the ability to create, protect and utilize the Intellectual Property, facing with more and more intensive competition. กกกก
